About Us
What is Fire In Mind?
Fire In Mind aims to be an online community resource and contact point for all people interested in living with bushfire risk. We continue to learn about bushfire The more we share what we know and believe, and stay open to other's beliefs and experiences, the more we can develop our capacity not just as individuals, but as communities, to respond to and recover from bushfires.
We support artists and storytellers, fire fighters and fire historians, businesses and government departments, researchers and ordinary householders as all having a valuable contribution to developing bushfire consciousness and survival strategies.
Fire In Mind is a new and growing social online enterprise. We rely on feedback from you to tell us what it is you want and need from a website dedicated to preparing for bushfires.
Who’s behind Fire In Mind?
Nearly 6 years ago Kate moved with her partner and three children from the city to a bush town on the edge of Melbourne, a town that was destroyed in the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires.
After moving Kate was surprised when she couldn’t easily access the history of that fateful February day in 1983. As a way of connecting with the town’s history, she obtained a grant and organised a local forum called “Women and Children on Ash Wednesday”.
Kate then became a CFA trained community fireguard facilitator and Fire Ready presenter. For the last four fire seasons Kate has worked for the CFA, educating and facilitating the community to prepare for bushfires.
Previously Kate worked as a community lawyer for 17 years and since moving to the bush she has worked in community development for her local Shire. Kate also specialises in group facilitation and processes for creating understanding amongst people in the same room as well as online. She now focuses full time on Fire In Mind, following her passion for community empowerment around bushfire.
